Beach Club
One of the oldest swimming clubs in Balmoral is the Balmoral Beach Club. The Balmoral Beach Club or BBC was founded on February 12, 1914 and is located at the north end of The Esplanade past Awaba Street on Edwards Beach, one of the two beaches which make up Balmoral on Sydney Harbour. This social and swimming club was established by a number of young men from Mosman who called themselves “The Smugglers.” A simple wooden building which opened on January 24, 1915 served as the clubhouse. The Club's present building was built in 1999. Today, the Club has about 2000 members and a waiting list. BBC aims to provide accessible beach facilities for its members and a feeling of camaraderie among its club members.
BBC holds social events and swimming races in the Harbour that are supported by its members. All year round, more than a hundred swimmers take part in the Club's Saturday or Sunday races. The Club also holds early Sunday morning athletic events such as hills run around Mosman, triathlons and biathlons.
Those interested in joining the Club must be nominated and seconded by two current financial members who have been members for a period not less than three years. Members are categorized as Senior Members or Junior Members. Senior Members are entitled to all privileges connected with the Club. Junior Members are those aged 6 to 17 years. Entrance fee for ordinary members is $850.
